You are invited to participate in the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program!
In addition to reading 1000 books with your child before they start school, this program:
-
Helps create a bond between parent & child, through books
-
Helps to prepare children to be ready to learn to read when they enter kindergarten
-
Helps strengthen early literacy skills, crucial to a child's development
How to Participate
-
Visit the children's department to register, receive your information folder, and a reading log. You can also register online.
-
Read every day! If you read two books each day with your child, in just one year, you will have read 730 books!
-
Track it! Use the reading log in your information folder. For every 100 books read, your child will receive a prize!
What books can we read?
You can read any book your child is interested in; they do not need to be books from the Library.
What if my child wants to read the same book, over and over again?
Children learn through repetition. Each time you read a book, it counts as one book read.
Can I log the books my child hears in story time?
Yes! Any and every book your child hears read aloud can be counted in this program.
How long does this program take?
This program is designed to take 3-5 years to complete; however, each family will work at their own pace.
My child is starting Kindergarten next year. Can we participate?
Yes! Depending on what month it is, you may need to read 3-7 books per day with your child to complete the program on time. If your child doesn't finish before the first day of school, that is okay. Just keep reading and check in with us once you complete the program for your child's final prize.
