On your mark… get set… BUILD!

Lego Derby at the Library on March 28 at 2pm. 

Get ready for a fun-filled Lego Derby at the library! You are invited to design and build your own Lego race cars, then watch them zoom down the track in a friendly competition that celebrates creativity, teamwork, and imagination. Whether you’re building for speed or style, everyone is welcome to participate and cheer on the racers.

Rules and Guidelines

Car Construction: 

  • Cars must be made entirely of Lego bricks ONLY-no other non-Lego pieces are allowed.
  • WPL will provide a car chassis (base) and wheels. If you choose to use your own chassis and wheels the Lego flat plate can be no more than 5x22 - the wheels can not be any bigger than 1.5 inches in diameter. 
  • Maximum Car Weight - 5.0 oz.
  • Maximum Car Height = 4.5 inches
  • Maximum Car Width  = 3 inches
  • Maximum Car Length  = 10 inches
  • Bottom Clearance = 3/8 inch 
  • Each car must have 4 wheels.

Car Modifications: 

  • Car modifications are not allowed.
  • Wheel bearings, washers, or bushings are prohibited.
  • The car must not ride on any type of spring.
  • So called "cheater bars" at the front of the car to give an unfair starting advantage are prohibited. 
  • No starting or propulsion devices. 
  • The car must be freewheeling. 
  • Lubrication is not allowed.

Car Repairs

  • If pieces fall off the car, the racer will have 2 minutes to put pieces back on the car.
  • No additional pieces may be added when the car is repaired.

Other Race Rules

  • Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it will be allowed to compete.
  • Any modifications not expressly forbidden by any of the rules above are allowed, subject to final decision by a race official. 
  • The inspection committee may disqualify any car that does not meet the above specifications. 

Age Groups

Youth - Ages 0-11

Teen - Ages 12-18

Adult - Ages 19+

Prizes

  • 1st and 2nd Place will be awarded in each age group.
  • Best Design/Creativity in each age group.

Race Structure

Racers will compete in a round-robin style race within their age group, meaning each car will race multiple times against others in the same age range. This gives everyone plenty of chances to race and keeps the event fun and fair for all participants.

How to Enter

  • Racers can build their own racecar at home following the guidelines above.
  • Official WPL Lego Chassis and Wheels will be available at the help desk upon registration while supplies last. 
  • Racers can attend one of WPL's Lego building sessions on February 28 at 10:30am, or March 12 at 6:30pm. 
  • Racers can come early on race day to build their racecar on March 28 from 9am-12pm. 
  • Racers must complete an entry form and pass the official inspection prior to racing.
