There is nothing like reading a good old-fashioned book. Paper books can be read ANYWHERE, don't have to have a special "reader", don't have to have special expensive batteries, are low-cost, can be referenced later repeatedly over and over. There is NOTHING that can replace good old-fashioned books.

Thanks for writing, Tim. I can understand that keeping track of due dates -- particularly if you check out materials more than once a week -- can be a chore. The Library has two loan periods: Two weeks on books (except for those books marked "Bestseller Express) and one week on videos/DVDs. However, things are complicated by the fact that items requested from a Search Ohio consortium library have different loan periods. This is not something over which Wadsworth Library has control. If you have elected to receive account notifications via email, you should be receiving weekly account updates as well as a message about items that are about to come due. That reminder message is usually in your inbox two to three days before the item's due date. You then have the option of logging into your account and renewing or calling us to renew the items for you. If you are not receiving email notices from us, please call the circulation department (330-334-5761)to check that we have the correct email address in your record. Thanks!

I feel as if I am continually on the roller coaster of paying overdue fines, checking to see if the items I have are due, and generally minding my account as opposed to just enjoying what the library has to offer. A solution to this problem would be to have a standard checkout time period for all materials to be three weeks, period. It would equate to less staff time spent being book police, and would result in a much less hostile experience. I find myself avoiding checking out material as I do not want the hassle of managing it and paying the piper when I fail.

The Library is open on a number of federal holidays including Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Columbus Day, and Veterans Day. While the Library is closed on Washington’s Birthday (a.k.a Presidents Day), Library employees report to work for staff training. The Library’s decision to provide services on certain federal holidays is not an indication of support for or opposition against the purpose of the holiday, but instead is a reflection of our desire to meet the information needs of our local community.

What an embarassment to our community that the Wadsworth Library year after year continues to refuse to honor the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on this day. Is this an intentional reflection of the views of the Library Board about the place of Dr. King and other minorities in America?

I'll pass your comment along to the appropriate staff person, Theresa. Instructor availability is an issue, for one, because of cutbacks in staffing in the evening and on weekends. Please understand that the classes listed above are for true beginners. If you are knowledgeable in the basics of computers, you might want to look at our OpenOffice classes on spreadsheets, presentations, and word processing -- some of those classes are offered in the evening.

This was definitely a worthwhile program. Mr. McGarrity described events in vivid detail, completely holding the attention of the audience. He was able to articulate the details of PTSD quite well.

The email reminders are GREAT. There is a link in the email and I can just click on that and renew everything online. The only thing that could perhaps be improved is is that it renews not from the due date, but from the date I renew online. So if I renew 3 days early, I get 3 days less time and I never remember to go back in on the exact day to renew so I just renew everything when the email comes. I also love the self service checkout. I hate waiting in line and with the self service, I almost never have to wait.

Thanks for participating! We had record numbers this year for the children's program: 1,445 participants who read for 1,820 hours. We also had 2,506 attendees for the weekly programs. We hope you'll join us for our very first Scholastic Book Fair on August 11-13!

My husband and read a lot, so the library is a wonderful asset for us! We use the search function to put new books on reserve, and we can check online to see if any of them are ready for pick up. Every year we save far more in the cost of books we don't buy than we pay in taxes! We also stop by periodically to read current magazines and to check out some that are circulating. We are so fortunate in Wadsworth to have our wonderful library and its staff!!

Very nice group. Very informal. I think you could come any time even if you didn't make the first ones. I came 1 hour late! It was my first time. Had very young people as well as older people, all ages. They actually meet 2x per month on an ongoing basis as well.

There are several ways I save. Since I am without a computer for a few months, it's great to be able to use one at the library. It's also nice to request the latest books...and nice to borrow movies. I'm a huge fan of the library!!

When I see a book online that looks good, I'll get it from the library to see if it really is any good! I've only bought 1 or 2 after borrowing them first, so it works good! Our kids love the children's programs. The computer programs in the children's department is also great. The kids get excited to go to the library so it's entertainment, too!!

My family and I save money at the WPL by taking advantage of interesting activities held there. Last year I attended a great flute and harp concert without having to pay any money at the door. When it comes to activities such as this concert, taxpayers' dollars are well-spent in providing youth with an inexpensive and fun way to learn.

I'm glad to see so many comments on this post! Certainly Ryan is correct about library services not truly being "free" in the sense of not costing anything. I like to think of library service as being "pre-paid." What is a real shame is all the people who let that pre-payment go to waste by not availing themselves of everything the Library has to offer.

@Ryan: Tami said it makes her feel as if she got everything for free. As if. Ryan's right, it's not free, it's a shared expense between taxpayers. Still, it's a bargain! I like checking out books, not having to worry if it turns out I don't like the book. I can just return it. And if I like it enough I can buy a copy from a bookstore. How come the government seldom gets credit for things it does well?

@Ryan: I realize that it is not free because yes, I do pay taxes. However, I utilize those tax dollars by visiting the library instead of going out and renting or buying DVD's, books and CD's. I think that utilizing the library to it's fullest potential is a great way of saving money!

Use of online computer service are fast and FREE as I am not having to pay for internet connection from my home for the 2 hours of use I have each day available at Wadsworth Library!! Plus all the reference materials, books, tapes, CD's, DVD's ETC! Thank you Wadsworth city, Medina county, Ohio state, and USA tax payers!!

Nothing is free. The only way it is free is if you don't pay propery taxes, local, state, federal taxes. then i guess it is free. Yeah it might feel like it is free but iot is not. how come anything the goverment does is free?

I love the self-service option. It is quick, painless and there is always one available. The only part that I do not like is that it seems like it is in an attempt to eliminate employees, or a reaction to less employees staffed. Libraries provide public services we take for granted. The email service and online request features are very helpful. Thanks for the advancements, you are appreciated.

Kathy- Email or text notification is probably going to work better for you than phone calls. With staff layoffs in the Library's immediate future, it's unlikely that we'd be able to make calls in a timely manner. As you will note in the article above, we not only send out weekly account updates, but also send email/text messages when a hold has arrived for pickup. This notice is generated as soon as the item has been routed in, and you have one week (7 days) in which to retrieve your materials. Thanks for submitting your concerns regarding our move to self service checkout. It is a different model for us, but one that is becoming more and more common in public libraries across the country. The driving force for the change revolves around operating costs and the need to manage tax dollars effectively. We believe the move will allow us to begin using our staffing resources differently. In the long run, we'll need to pay fewer staff to work in the circulation function and can shift those resources to other tasks where the need is great. We think we can do that without increasing our salary expenses - which is a positive response to our taxpayers, as well as the current economy.

I am not pleased with the personal check out being set up at the library now nor having to locate my reserve books. I think there are going to be a lot of problems trying to check out books. I do not see how this is an improvement for the library or for those using the library

This concept seemed to be quite grand I think it is well overdoing it. Do you think that the economy is in a upswing? Last time I checked the unemployment rate is up and salaries are not increasing to keep up with inflation. Where is the money coming from to build this city within a city? I do not have a problem with a new high school but this is to the extreme. Look at Medina High School and Highland they are like college campus! And Wadsworth who brags that they get the most for each dollar spent on each student is just about to do the same thing! I am sure that I am not the only one that feels this way! We need to be frugal and get the most for our money! Just because it is large does not mean the students are going to be smarter. So I know I am only one person just remember we can not afford extreme tax increases! Please listen to all citizens! Just build a frugal,green and a normal building we do not need all the bells and whistles.

I can't provide you with a direct answer to either part of your questions because there are a lot of "it depends" involved. (It will depend on the subject of the item, if it fits our collection development policy, when it was published, is it available for purchase, etc.) I can say we will make every effort to obtain the book for you as quickly as possible. We are also waiting for the technological issues to be resolved with OhioLink to be able to provide customers access to all of the university libraries in Ohio. This will greatly broaden the availability of research materials.

If you're on the page which lists the items you have checked out, try checking the box to the left of each item you want to renew, then using the "Renew Selected" button above the list of items. It does return you to the same page, but in the list of items, in the "Status" column, it should indicate that the items you selected have been renewed. For example when I renew an item on my record, it now says:

DUE 11-14-07 RENEWED
Now due 11-21-07
Renewed 1 time

Let us know if this doesn't work for you.

I have been unable to see my account. I was told to click on renew and when I do it flashs and shows the same screen. I have a large number of books out and I have no idea when they are due and hopefully I will not receive fines for them.
