The Queen of Katwe
by Tim Crothers
film starring Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo
rn
Tim Crothers set out to tell the story of 10-year-old Phiona who lived with her family in the impoverished area of Katwe, a slum in Uganda. Phiona meets a missionary who has been teaching local children chess, and she becomes fascinated. Soon Phiona is competing in major chess tournaments, where she quickly finds out she is unprepared for the world outside Katwe. Phiona dreams of life outside of poverty and sees her opportunity to reach for greater things than she could have ever imagined. Does this story of survival and ambition translate from book to the screen? The film, starring Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, was praised for its acting and story, but we still want to know if the book was better.
