Slob by Ellen Potter
Owen Birnbaum is fat. Probably fatter than you are. He says so right in the beginning of the book. But he wasn't always fat. Something happened two years ago that changed everything. Owen is also smart. He has an I.Q one point below genius. He invents contraptions out of junk he collects. He plans to create a television that replays events of the the past, so that he can see what happened that fateful day two years ago when all his problems started. Owen has a lot of problems. He gets picked on because of his size, his sister wants to be a boy called Jeremy, his sadistic gym teacher is out to get him, and he has made an enemy of the meanest kid in the school. The thing is that irks Owen the most, though, is that his Oreos keep disappearing out of his lunch box! The book deals with some very serious issues, but Owen is an endearing boy, and parts of the story are hilarious. As the story unfolds, the reader finds that a tragedy has occurred in the past, and Owen deals with it by overeating, and Jeremy deals by becoming tougher. The ending is a surprise, but it is also very satisfying. A great read and a really upbeat book! | ||||||
