Creepy Carrots by Aaron Reynolds

Have you ever had a favorite food? One that you just couldn't stop eating? Well, Jasper Rabbit just LOVED carrots. Anytime he passed by Crackenhopper Field he just had to take a nibble of the best carrots in the world!!!! But things changed when the carrots starting following Jasper home. Or were they? Check out one of this year's Caldecott Honor books. This storyline is clever – the illustrations are perfect!

The Blackhope Enigma by Teresa Flavin

Children leaving this world and going into another world and having adventures, fighting villains, and finding their way back is a favorite plot.    Sunni, Dean, and Blaise find their way into an enchanted painting and find the magical world of Arcadia.  In their search for the way out of the painting and back home, they must battle beasts, pirates, mysterious strangers, and a thief from their own time.

Slob by Ellen Potter

Owen Birnbaum is fat.  Probably fatter than you are.  He says so right in the beginning of the book.  But he wasn't always fat.  Something happened two years ago that changed everything.  Owen is also smart. He has an I.Q one point below genius. He invents contraptions out of junk he collects. He plans to create a television that replays events of the the past, so that he can see what happened that fateful day two years ago when all his problems started.   Owen has a lot of problems.  He gets picked on because of his size, his sister wants to be a boy called Jeremy, his sadistic gym teacher is out to get him, and he has made an enemy of the meanest kid in the school.  The thing is that irks Owen the most, though, is that his Oreos keep disappearing out of his lunch box!

The book deals with some very serious issues, but Owen is an endearing boy, and parts of the story are hilarious.  As the story unfolds, the reader finds that a tragedy has occurred in the past, and Owen deals with it by overeating, and Jeremy deals by becoming tougher.  The ending is a surprise, but it is also very satisfying.  A great read and a really upbeat book!
